BSOD Error in Windows 8

Windows 8 newly launched Window operating system has made a remarkable presence in market with its unbelievable feature.
But the problems related to computer are hardly changed. In Window 8 operating system for BSOD rather than displaying detailed technical information about the error, it simply displays a short explanation that the system needs to restart, the technical name of the error and a sad facial expression with light shade of blue in the background color. It also contains a lighter shade of in the background. BSOD is abbreviation of BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH. This BSOD occur when computer encounters a critical error which results in system crash. Official name of BSOD is STOP error. This type of error can’t be recovered by windows operating system and it goes into halt screen...The term is named after the color of the screen generated by the error.

Causes of BSOD:

BSOD or Stop error can be caused due to many reasons like hardware and driver related issues, incompatible software, faulty driver etc.

When BSOD occur it is always advised to note down the error. Every code is concerned with particular type of error.

· The name of the error, such as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

· The hexadecimal number, such as 0x00000050, which can be abbreviated as 0x50.

· The parameters (in hexadecimal format), which follow the hex number and are in parenthesis.

· The file or driver listed, if present.

List of Common Error message encountered due to BSOD:

1. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x0000000A: This BSOD occurs caused by faulty diver and incompatible software. It may be possible you have tried to installed incompatible software in your computer which has resulted in BSOD.

2. DATA_BUS_ERROR 0x0000002E:

This type of error occurs due to corrupt memory (RAM).Make sure your RAM is compatible to the motherboard and is installed properly.

3. INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE 0x0000007B:

This can occur if your hard drives are configured incorrectly.  If you have PATA (IDE) hard drives, make sure that the jumpers are in the correct location.  Certain viruses or installing the incorrect driver for your hard drive controller can also cause this.

4. MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION 0x0000009C:

This error is often caused by the CPU like if the CPU  is overclocked, then it will boost the voltages which in turn generate the thermal output to sky rocket .This will result in the physical damage of computer. Make sure that all of the fans in the case are spinning and that the CPU isn't overheating.  It may also be caused by a faulty power supply.

5. NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM (0x00000024):

This type of error occurs due to Corrupted NTFS file system or bad sectors on the hard disk can induce this error. Most likely problem occurred in ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS drives is corrupted.

6. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA 0x00000050:

This type of error occurs due to faulty hardware or the event failure of installed hardware usually related to defective RAM, be it main memory, L2 RAM cache, or video RAM. Another common cause is the installation of a faulty system service, Antivirus software can also trigger this error and corrupted NTFS volume.

7.  PFN_LIST_CORRUPT 0x0000004E:

This error is typically caused by a driver passing a bad memory descriptor list. For example, the driver might have called MmUnlockPages twice with the same list

Window 8 BSOD Solution:-

In the last blog I have mentioned the common causes of BSOD or Stop Error in Window 8 and the information related to the common error codes. In this article I will provide some tips and necessary measures which you must follow to prevent BSOD.

When BSOD occurs general steps to follow:-

1. Use Last Known Good Configuration: If you have recently added a hardware or software, continuously press F8 during booting and select “Last Known Good Configuration."

2.   Test your Random Access Memory (RAM):- You can test your RAM using a Memory Test program when booting from the Windows Installation DVD. Step-by-step instructions with screen shots are given in System Restore or Recovery section of Window 8, Window 7.

3.  Recent software, hardware and/or driver changes:- If you have installed incompatible software or hardware which leads to undesired change in computer configuration like installing graphic card, network card, chipset, graphics card, sound card, and more.

Then rollback all changes from Device manger.Steps to follow:
· Go to Start - > Run and then type devmgmt.msc.
· Right-click the device and click Properties option.
· Go to the Driver tab and click "Roll Back Driver" and
· Restart your computer.

4.   Use Safe Mode, System Restore and Clean Boot: Try to boot in Safe Mode.  To do this, press F8 after the initial screen a few times before the Window Screen appears. Select Safe Mode and press Enter. It is always advised to make restore points so that by using System Restore you can rollback all changes you had made. If that doesn't work, try Safe Mode again, but don't use System Restore. If you can be in Safe Mode for a while without getting a BSOD, you can try a "Clean boot."

5.  Advanced Hardware-related troubleshooting techniques:
Here are some additional troubleshooting techniques if you think that it may be caused by failing hardware:
· Remove all unnecessary hardware. All you really need is your motherboard, your hard drive, power supply, CPU, fans, RAM and graphics card.
· If you have any spare components (besides a motherboard and hard drive), try swapping them one at a time. Especially try to switch the power supply if possible. Look on the motherboard for burn marks or leaking capacitors.
· There are also stress tests that you can run. These use different parts of your computer (often the CPU) to make sure that they are not overheating nor have problems.

Some BSOD error causes and Solution:-

· IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x0000000A:  Look on the error to see if it contains the driver information.  If so, look the driver up on Google to see which program it belongs to, and then try to update or uninstall that program. Like if you have two or more programs that perform the same function, such as two internet security programs, uninstall one to see if that helps.

· DATA_BUS_ERROR 0x0000002E: The most common cause of this error message is due to faulty hardware, any existing hardware failure. If existing hardware has failed, replace or remove the failed hardware component. To determine which component has failed, use the diagnostic utility supplied by the hardware manufacturer. For information on how to use the vendor-provided diagnostic utility, please refer to the user's manual or other documentation provided by the hardware manufacturer.

· PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA 0x00000050: This type of error occurs due to some compatibility issues between Windows XP SP1 and the display adapter drivers. To resolve this problem, start your computer in Safe mode, remove the display adapter, rename the .inf files that are associated with the display adapter drivers, restart your computer in Normal mode, and then update your display adapter drivers.

· PFN_LIST_CORRUPT 0x0000004E: This type of error occurs due to corrupt memory sectors. You have to use a memory tester to confirm if it is defective or if you have spare memory then replaced it.

“Windows 7 and Vista include a Memory Test program when booting from the Windows Installation DVD. Step-by-step instructions with screen shots are available at System Restore or Recovery section of Window 8, Window 7, and Window Vista.”

· MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION 0x0000009C:This type of error occur due to Processor specific detected hardware problems, internal memory cache errors, system bus errors It can also occur due overheating form failed hardware. By using Diagnostic tool find the faulty hardware and replaced with the new one compatible with your system.
